Every creative is different and I think there aren’t any universal rules that apply. Some creatives need help getting our of their own way, in which case the manager can be an editor narrowing their scope and cutting away the fat. Others yet need someone to bounce ideas off of, after which they need either to be left along, or be supported by a comfortable voice of reason. Some creatives are completely self-sufficient and all you need to do is send them their check. Creatives are a varied group of people, from asperger-y savants to hyped up manics, from reasonable adults to those that need baby sitting. A manager’s job is to know which methods of management will get the best work out of the creatives, while respecting everyone involved in the process, including the customer.
